Should I clean my ears with cotton buds?

C. Rodgers

You may have heard the saying "don't put anything smaller than your elbow in your ears". Well its true: this saying basically means don't put ANYTHING in your ears. Cotton buds are the cause of a lot of ear problems, from impacted ear wax to trauma to the eardrum. We have lost count of the number of times we have actually found the end from a cotton bud in somebody's ear when they thought wax was the problem!

Ears are self-cleaning and so you do not need to clean them with cotton buds. If you are struggling with blocked ears why not telephone us at Lees Optical on 0161 627 5735. We offer private ear wax removal by our fully trained and insured practitioner. You may want to have your ears checked by your GP first to check that the problem is actually due to wax. If you can't get in to see your GP then we can examine your ears for a £10 consultation fee. If wax removal is required then the consultation fee is waived and it costs £35 for one ear and £50 for two.
